How does a tank gauge work in a 4-hole LPG tank.

In this article we explain how a contents meter works in a (4-hole) LPG tank and how you can see the tank contents on an LED indicator.

Almost every LPG tank contains a so-called tank meter that is screwed onto/in the LPG tank. A tank gauge has a tank float (float) that is connected by a rod and shaft to a gasket in the external brass part of the tank gauge in which a tank clock or tank sensor can be placed. This brass part also closes the hole in the tank. In other words the float, which rises or falls with the tank contents, changes the position of the magnet in the brass. A tank clock or tank sensor also has a magnet and fits exactly into the concavity of this brass part. The magnet of the tank sensor now moves with the magnet and the float and thus displays the contents of the tank. The tank sensor can be replaced without having to open the LPG tank, because the tank gauge with the brass part remains attached to the tank.

A tank meter is available in many variants, so that there is a suitable version for every type of LPG tank. LPG tanks are available in many different variants; Cylinder tank or Ring tank, Different diameter / tank height, below 52° (Fuel tanks) or below 105° (Vapor gas tanks).

If you would also like to see the tank content in another place (for example on the dashboard), you should use a tank sensor with an internal potentiometer with a certain resistance profile and connect it electrically to an LED content indicator. In the LPG world, the most common resistance variation is 0 - 90 Ohm. 0 Ohm resistance when the tank is empty and 90 Ohm when the tank is full. The content indicator must be suitable for the resistance profile of the tank sensor.

This works in principle the same with a MultiValve LPG Tank, with the difference that the tank float is used for content measurement as well as for the 80% filling stop and a different type of tank sensor physically fits on a multivalve.
